Shipping of Marrow or PBSC for Purging

Prior to shipping PBSC or marrow to CHLA for purging the following must be sent via FAX to CHLA at 323-665-8405 (call 323-669-5632 by voice to verify receipt):

  • A copy of a signed informed consent for purging that contains the language given in the example found on the Downloadable Forms page.

  • A copy of an order requesting purging of the product signed by the attending physician.

  • Details of the product being shipped (volume, cell counts, CD34 content (if known), the shipping carrier and tracking information, and the expected arrival time.

Unless CHLA is in possession of a signed consent form that follows the consent form guidelines for this protocol and is approved by the shipping institution's IRB, the laboratory at CHLA will be unable to accept the shipped product and it will be returned to the sender.

Marrow or PBSC must be shipped in properly labeled, sealed blood product bags (see labeling details), sealed in an outer plastic bag, and transported in a Styrofoam container of 8 cu ft, with packing added as needed to prevent undue bouncing of the stem cell bags inside the Styrofoam container.

An approved temperature monitor that records if the product is subjected to a temperature outside of the range of +5 degs C to +38 degs C (ColdSNAP+ Dual Temp Recorder, Model # CT5C-D+38C, available from Telatemp, phone 1-800-321-5160, www.telatemp.com) must be included next to the stem cell product bag inside the shipping container.

The product to be purged must be accompanied by the signed product transmittal/physician order form, results of serology done on the patients serum with 30 days prior to stem cell collection as specified below and the results of ABO blood typing done on the collected marrow or PBSC by laboratory of the collecting institution. Please see the section on required testing for more information.
